Supporting Service Dogs and Their Handlers

National Service Dog Association (NSDA) is an independent organization dedicated to supporting service-dog handlers and their dogs.

We provide voluntary registration and identification services, educational resources, and products designed to support service-dog owners in their daily lives.

Our goal is to make helpful resources easy to access while promoting responsible service-dog ownership, proper training, and the health and wellbeing of working dogs.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support service-dog handlers with reliable resources, quality products, and clear information.

We believe service dogs are working partners and should receive proper care, training, and respect.

We also believe that service-dog owners should have access to straightforward information so they can better understand their responsibilities.

What We Offer

National Service Dog Association provides services and resources that may include:

  • Voluntary service-dog registration

  • Identification cards and documentation

  • Service-dog vests and accessories

  • Training and handling resources

  • Educational information

  • Products for service dogs and their handlers

Our services are designed to support handlers and their dogs. They do not replace proper training, veterinary care, or any legal requirements that may apply.

About Our Registration

NSDA registration is voluntary and privately issued.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) does not require service dogs to be registered or certified.

National Service Dog Association is a private organization. We are not a government agency and are not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or any other federal agency.

An NSDA registration, identification card, certificate, vest, or other product does not by itself establish that a dog is a service animal under federal law.

Our registration also does not guarantee access to businesses, transportation, housing, or other locations.

Responsible Service-Dog Ownership

We encourage every handler to take responsibility for the care, training, and behavior of their dog.

Responsible service-dog ownership includes:

Proper Training

Service dogs should be appropriately trained to perform tasks related to their handler's disability and to behave safely in public.

Responsible Handling

Handlers should keep their dogs under control and respect businesses, public spaces, and other people.

Health and Wellbeing

Working dogs need proper nutrition, veterinary care, exercise, rest, and time away from work.

Understanding the Rules

Handlers should understand the laws and requirements that apply to service dogs in their particular situation.

Our Commitment to Quality

We want our customers to understand exactly what they are purchasing.

We are committed to providing clear information about our products and services and to being transparent about what our registration and identification services do—and do not—provide.

Our goal is to support the service-dog community through useful resources, responsible practices, and quality products.

National Service Dog Association

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act (FHA) do not require service dogs to be registered or certified. There is also no official federal registration database for service dogs.

NSDA offers voluntary registration and identification services for service-dog handlers who choose to use them.

NSDA registration is intended to provide voluntary identification and documentation and to support responsible service-dog handling. Registration is not required by federal law and does not guarantee access to public places, housing, transportation, or other locations.
